Steamboat Springs was the ideal place for the original pioneer family (the Crawford’s) to settle and grow roots. When they first arrived in 1875, they quickly befriended Yarmonite, the local leader of the Yampatika tribe. He was always friendly with the settlers and made bows for his son and young Logan Crawford. The two boys enjoyed hunting chipmunks and, “just shooting arrows into the air”. Yarmonite was a good friend to the Crawfords and even warned them when trouble was brewing between settlers and natives.
