In addition to the western cowboy heritage you’ll feel connected to at Marabou, some of the best memories can be made in the nearby town of Steamboat Springs. Up until 1912, skiing was only thought of as a mode of transportation. Carl Howelsen came to Steamboat to show that skiing could also be fun. He built the town’s famed Howelsen Hill located in downtown Steamboat. The hill maintains the original 30, 50, 70 and 90 meter jumps and is used an an Olympic training site. It remains the oldest ski area in continuous operation in Colorado.
Howelsen also organized the first Winter Carnival in 1914 as a way of introducing competitive skiing and celebrating winter. Over 100 years later, the event features ski races. ski jumping, skijoring, and the nation’s only high school marching band on skis. It is a must see tradition!
